The Da Vinci Code

I'm sure a lot of people have read the book or at least watched the movie. The Da Vinci Code is a about professor that major in symbology (study of the code) and attracted to the last part of the movie which is the cryptex. So, some secrets are so big that the information has to be contained in some kind of code.

Type of Cipher

  1. Morse Code
  2. ASCII
  3. Transposition cipher
  4. Substitution cipher
  5. Vinegere Cipher

Sound Morse Code

1) morse code

I'm sure you already know this, morse code is used in wars especially world war II for carrying messages. But screw all that, you're here to know how to make your own code right? you can do in writing or simply type in computer. The Video show the decipher for Morse code. Let say you want to convey a message, "The real killer is Jack".

1)"The" = "- .... .", make sure between each letter, there's one dot gap. Don't put "-....." instead. it may convey another meaning.

2)So, now between each word. For typing, it's better to have 3 dot gap. For example, "the real killer" = "- .... . .-. . .- .-.. -.- .. .-.. .-.. . .-."

You can do different medium beside typing, you can do in flashlight, in form of clicks (even mouse) or say "dit" "dah" , dit = dot, dah = dash. Check the video out and try translate what's the meaning of it. If you can't hear it, this is the code .-. . .- .-.. - .. -- . .. ... ..-. --- ..- .-. - .. -- . ..-. .- ... - . .-.

2) ASCII Cipher (binary version)

There's a few type of ASCII code, but the easiest is binary version. All computer science students should know this already. Computer is done through basic of binary. We use number 1 to 10, and then repeated back by 11, binary is different maximum number is 1. after 1 is 10 and then 11, and then back to 100 instead of 12. So, this code you need a code which you can find at here. I think we should stick to one message to convert to code. We take the previous one "The real killer is Jack"

1)Select table here as Code Table.

2)This code usually don't provide space between the words. So just simply bind them together. Lets find the word "The". Code for "T" = 01110100 , "h" = 01101000 "e" = 01100101

3) I would suggest use the tool on the link to create the code faster, so continue finishing the code in binary :D

spoiler alert! : 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01110010 01100101 01100001 01101100 00100000 01101011 01101001 01101100 01101100 01100101 01110010 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01001010 01100001 01100011 01101011

3) Transposition cipher

Looking at newspaper on Sunday, you might find Jumbled up words on the Fun section. Yes. this is same old cipher. Other words is Anagram. This is simple yet hard to guess because it might changed to other meaning. For the word "The real killer is Jack" could be changed to "A Heretical Jerk Skill".

1) Take the word "The real killer is Jack" by changing position of letter.

2) Make sure the letter at the start and the end of the words are not the same letter at the original. Our Mnid can atcaully Inrpetert as lnog the erlay and the end are the smae if you know what I'm saying.

3) It's OK to make the code which have no space to make it harder to crack. For example, "jkeilheclritklarsa" or "het lrae lekirl si cjka"

4) Substitution Cipher

Similar to transposition cipher, substitution cipher is and old type of cipher. To make it simple, we use the Caesar Rotate 13 cipher instead. All 26 letter is divided into 2 rows. ABCDEFGHIJKLM in row 1st, and second row is NOPQRSTUVWXYZ. In this code, like the sub title says which we substitute A > N vice versa. B>O, C>P and so on. it also reversible lets say the code is N, so it deciphered to A. Easy as that

1) Lets translate "The real killer is Jack" look at the table , T>G, H>U etc.

2) since there's a space involve, similar to Transposition Cipher, you can make it harder by bind all the words without space.

3) The code for "The real killer is Jack" is "ghrernyxvyyrevfwnpx

So now, Comment me the meaning under this code if you got what it takes guvfuhovfnjrfbzr

5) Vinegere Cipher

This is quite a hard cipher. To create the code, and to decipher it. It's usually a kind of communication between two people. It has the table which involves 3 things:-

  1. The Code
  2. Keyword
  3. Text

Since we don't have any keyword, I would say the Keyword is CIPHER. total letters on "TherealkillerisJack" is 19 letters. since CIPHER is not enough, it will loop over and over again. so keyword to cipher it is "CIPHERCIPHERCIPHERC"

1) Look at the Vinegere's Table, There are 3 group (code, keyword, text)

  • The list of letter on the top is the letter for the code.
  • The list of letter on the left side is the letter for the keyword
  • The letters on the right bottom, bellow the line or the right of the line is the text.

text

K
keyword
C
I
P
H
E
R
C
I
P
H
E
R
C

2) Now, you need a ruler unless your eyes are very sharp. Lets do the first letter. Look on the keyword letters which is C on the left side.

3)Then on the same row, find the word T.

4)Then, look for the letter same column on top which is the letter for the code which is R. So finish the other letters and you'll get RBLKAJJCTEJNPADCWLI.

"This hub is awesome"..it says above. ;-)

My girlfriends and I used to use similar ciphers to pass notes during class in school.. (yes, I know--naughty, naughty!)

We even made up our own, and instead of transpositions or anything like that. ... we just made twisted caricatures out of the alphabet letters, still used & spelled in their normal sequence. ;-)

This was very interesting, and I like your angle of attack beginning with the Da Vinci Code, which was a fascinating book and a well-done movie that followed the book quite well.

Voted up!

Thank you. This hub reminded me of some schoolgirl silliness, so I've posted a hub of my own about codes, but using a different angle and different codes than you've shown.

I've given you credit for the inspiration--with a link to this hub. I hope you enjoy my silly post.

Thank DMLizzy for referring us to this site..really amazing stuff! I like to decipher and play with code/jumble/puzzle type things. You've written a truly mind stimulating hub. Excellent.
